Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This collection covers 7 linear ft. and spans 1819-2012 with the bulk of the material dating 1933-1945. It is divided into two series: Stanwood R. Duval and Family Papers. The Stanwood R. Duval series mainly covers his military service in the Pacific during World War II and includes appointment letters, orders and certificates as well as his memoirs of his time in the service. The bulk of this series includes correspondence between Duval and his wife Bonnie Faught Duval and between Duval and his mother, Mamie Richardson Duval. Other materials in this series include birth, baptismal, marriage certificates and his diploma from Louisiana State University. Family photographs and scrapbooks are included in this series documenting Duval’s early life as well as that of his family. His wartime service is documented with photographs and newspaper clippings in a scrapbook kept by his mother. A later scrapbook documents a trip he and his brother Claude took in 1983 visiting some of the same locations of battles they had fought in during World War II.

The second series of Family Papers in this collection includes history, genealogy and correspondence from several related families including: Duval, Easton, Faught and Richardson. The correspondence in these files is primarily from the nineteenth century and documents family life and activities of various family ancestors. The Easton family is related to Stanwood through his paternal grandmother, Julia Easton Duval, wife of Dr. Claiborne Alexander Duval. The Richardson family is related through his mother, Mamie Richardson Duval. The Faught family files contain correspondence related to his in-laws.

Of note in the collection is a scrapbook documenting the history of the Duval family with photographs and genealogical charts. Also, of note is a patient account ledger (1905-1911) of Dr. J. Berwick Duval and a Civil War surgical kit owned by Duval’s paternal grandfather, Dr. Claiborne Alexander Duval.
