Correspondence in Group 1 is divided into personal and professional. The personal correspondence primarily contains letters from Elkins to his bride-to-be, Addie Randall, with the remaining correspondence occurring with friends and peers. Professional correspondence in this section contains letters from Elkins’ peers at NSU, the Terrebonne Parish School Board, and the Teachers’ Professional Investment Corporation. Speeches include Elkins’ address to various organizations and audiences, an interview with Elkins by KTIB radio, and a speech by his nephew—O.J. Richardson. Honors, diplomas, and certificates include honorary memberships for Elkins and his wife in various organizations, honors from Terrebonne Parish and the City of Thibodaux, programs for dinners and graduations, diplomas and certificates, honorary memberships and citizenships for various organizations and cities in La., and merit awards. Military materials include commendations, correspondence, receipts and expenditures, and special military orders. Newspaper clippings include articles on Elkins, family, friends, Nicholls State University, and local events. Family history includes a will, short genealogy, funeral register, and death certificate for Elkins. Photographs are largely undated and include those of Elkins, family, friends, homes, NSU buildings, social gatherings, and numerous unidentified people. Misc. Materials include a Masonic apron from the Bernice Lodge, sash with ornate cross, and two American Legion caps with honorary insignia Note: Elkins’ dissertation is cataloged separately and located in the archives stacks—call number 378.763 EL52s.
