Biographical / Historical

Allen J. Ellender was born in Montegut, La. on 24 September 1890. He later moved to Houma, La. where he began his political career as the City Attorney in 1913, later becoming the District Attorney for Terrebonne Parish in 1915. He paused his career from 1917-1918 to serve in World War I as an Artillery Sergeant. In 1921, he served as a delegate to the Louisiana Constitutional Convention, and later became the National Committeeman for Louisiana from 1939-1940. He was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1924-1936, the Floor Leader for Huey P. Long from 1928-1932, and then Speaker of the House from 1932-1936. He served as a Democrat in the U.S. Senate from 1937-1972. He served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, Chairman of Senate Appropriations Committee, and President Pro Tempore of the Senate. Ellender died 27 July 1972.
