David Middleton Papers
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of the papers of David Middleton dating from 1931 to 2016 and comprises eight series, including writings, correspondence, academic papers, subject files, personal papers, photographs, volumes and printed materials, and born digital materials. The collection documents his professional work as a poet and an educator, along with his personal and professional relationships with family, friends, writers, editors, and members of the academic community. Writings by Middleton consist predominantly of his poems and associated drafts, along with copies of correspondence, proofs, contracts, clippings, and other materials related to publishing. Correspondence contains personal and professional letters, including letters between Middleton and his family and friends, as well as literary correspondence relating to the publication of Middleton's poetry, awards, speaking engagements, and teaching. Academic papers consist of Middleton's teaching materials and papers associated with his positions as Chair of the Fletcher Lecture series, Head of the English Department, Professor Emeritus, and Poet-in-Residence Emeritus at Nicholls State University. Subject files include materials related to Middleton's areas of research (articles, copies of correspondence, and other research materials, along with writings), the work of friends and colleagues, events featuring his work (largely lectures, readings, and workshops), awards and recognition, Middleton's work as an editor, and other papers. Personal papers consist of Middleton's high school, college, and graduate school materials (notes, essays, and other papers), along with passports, address books, and family, religious, and financial papers. Photographs include images of Middleton, his family, his friends, and various events. Printed materials includes published collections of poetry, chapbooks, journals, newsletters, newspapers and clippings relating to the life and career or David Middleton. Born digital materials include files from fifty one floppy discs included in Middleton's personal papers. These files include poetry, teaching materials, academic materials, subject files, and personal papers.

Biographical Note
David Middleton is an American poet and professor. He was born on May 6, 1949 in Shreveport, Louisiana to David Vernon Middleton, Jr. and Anna Marie Sudduth Middleton. His childhood was spent in Shreveport, with extended periods spent visiting his maternal grandparents in rural Saline, Louisiana. After graduating from Woodlawn High School in 1967, Middleton attended college at Louisiana Tech University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in English in 1971. He then pursued graduate studies at Louisiana State University as an NDEA Fellow, where he received his Ph.D. in English in 1979. In 1976, he married Francine Kerne. Middleton began teaching at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana in 1977, becoming a full-time member of the English faculty in 1979 and continuing to teach there until his retirement in 2014. In 1992, he was named Nicholls State's Poet-in-Residence, and upon his retirement was honored with the titles Professor Emeritus and Poet-in-Residence Emeritus.
