Scope and Contents

This collection covers 6 linear ft. and spans from 1878 to 1996, with the bulk of the material dating 1920-1944. It includes correspondence, clippings, ephemera, printed matter, memorabilia from medical societies, business records, and honors/certificates. Ephemera includes programs, membership cards, campaign cards, business cards, pamphlets, reports, and scrapbook items. Medical society records include programs, bulletins, reminder cards, constitution and bylaws, correspondence, and speeches for meetings of members. Business records include account ledgers of Gouaux's Drug Store and his work as a physician. Honors/certificates include medals, diplomas, and certificates for Gouaux, as well as medals belonging to his wife, Mathilde Robichaux.

Biographical / Historical

Francois Theophile Gouaux was born 22 February 1883 in Natchitoches, La. He obtained his degree in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1906 and received his medical license in 1907. Gouaux began practicing medicine in New Iberia until moving to Lockport in 1908 where he also established Gouaux's Drug Store. During his career as a physician and pharmacist, Gouaux also served as assistant coroner and health officer for Lafourche Parish. He was a member of several professional medical organizations and a renowned lecturer on typhoid and tetanus.
