Biographical / Historical

Myrtle Grove Plantation was located on Bayou Terrebonne several miles below Houma in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. The plantation was owned by Robert Ruffin Barrow, Sr. and was inherited by his children Volumnia Roberta and Robert Ruffin Barrow, Jr. The property changed owners multiple times before becoming the sole property of Robert Ruffin Barrow, Jr.

The Myrtle Grove Syrup Company was formed in 1926 and declared bankruptcy in 1933. Myrtle Grove Sugars, Inc. was formed in 1928, and the mill closed in the late 1930s. Barrow, Jr.'s daughter Zoe Gayoso Barrow served as co-owner of the property, while his daughter Hallette Barrow Cole served as President of Myrtle Grove Syrup Company and his son-in-law Dr. Christian Grenes Cole served as President of Myrtle Grove Sugars, Inc.
