Scope and Contents
This collection comprises research materials relating to Company B of the 48th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry. Materials include copies of the regimental roster, forms indicating the death of a soldier and an inventory of their personal effects, and an excerpt from A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion discussing the 48th Regiment Infantry.

Historical Note
The 48th United States Colored Infantry was organized at Lake Providence, Louisiana, between May 6 and August 8, 1863, as the 10th Louisiana Infantry Volunteers Regiment (African Descent). The
regiment served at post duty at Vicksburg, in scouting expeditions in Mississippi, at the siege of Fort Blakely, Alabama, and in guard duty at the Rio Grande River in Texas. On March 11, 1864, the regiment’s designation was changed to the 48th United States Colored Infantry. The 48th regiment was mustered out of service on January 4, 1866. The regiment lost 62 men in combat and 465 by disease.
