Biographical / Historical

John H. Robichaux, Sr. was born on October 27th, 1920 on Cedar Grove Plantation, located on Highway 309 north of Labadieville, Louisiana. His father was Francis Albert Robichaux and his grandfather was Eugene Godfrey Robichaux. He graduated from St. Stanislaus College in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi in 1940, and later attended Soule Business College in New Orleans. He worked as a welder building troop carriers at Higgins Industries before returning the Cedar Grove to farm sugar cane in 1942. Due to a hearing disability, he was not drafted to serve in World War II. Robichaux farmed sugar cane for ten years before opening John's Feed Store in Labadieville. In 1962, he sold the feed business and in 1962 took over the management of Lafourche Motors for his father-in-law.

Robichaux ran two unsuccessful campaigns for Sheriff of Assumption Parish in 1952 and 1959. In 1979, he was elected as the first Republican mayor of Thibodaux since Reconstruction. He served one term as mayor between 1980 and 1984.

Robichaux was married to Dorothy Jane Gray of Thibodaux.
