Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials from Lloyd Meyer's father and uncle respectively, Dr. A.J. Meyer and Dr. Louis E. Meyer, who were co-owners of Meyer's Drug Store in Thibodaux, La. It includes correspondence, postcards, constitutions and bylaws, photographs, scrapbooks, pedigree charts, genealogy, birth records, marriage records, death records, magazines, newspapers, newspaper clippings, local history, medals, account ledgers for Meyer's Drug Store and Thibodaux Oyster Packing and Ice Company, physician's lists and medical booklets for the two doctors, invitations, brochures, excerpts on local history, school grades for Lloyd Meyer while attending Spring Hill College in Alabama, diplomas, graduation programs, excerpts of census records, first communion and general prayer cards, receipts and invoices, religious books, maps, music scores, and stock certificates.

Biographical Note

Lloyd Louis Meyer was born 12 February 1899 to Dr. Albert Joseph Meyer and Marie Brigitte Braud. Lloyd attended Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala. and later married Myrtle Catherine Taylor- the daughter of Marie Cecile Bergeron and John B. Taylor who was the owner/editor/publisher of the Thibodaux Weekly. In 1926, they had one son, Lloyd Louis Jr. who lived only a few weeks. Lloyd worked as a linotype operator for the Daily Comet newspaper in Thibodaux from 1924 to 1964. He also toured with several local dance bands as a pianist and was the organist for the Lafourche Council Knights of Columbus. Lloyd's father, Dr. Albert Joseph Meyer, was born in 1860 in Thibodaux to Louis Joseph Meyer and Armantine Boudreaux. Albert graduated from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Mo. and then from Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans. He began practicing medicine in 1896 in Thibodaux where he and his brother, Louis Edward, operated Meyer's Drug Store and worked together as general practice physicians, surgeons, and eye/ear/nose/throat specialists. Albert became the medical examiner for several life insurance companies, as well as the Catholic Knights of America. He was the vice-president of Thibodaux Ice Works (Thibodaux Oyster Packing and Ice Company) and served as the assistant coroner of Lafourche Parish for six years. He married Marie Brigitte Braud (daughter of Ellis and Eliska Braud who founded one of the department stores in Thibodaux). Dr. Louis Edward Meyer, Albert's brother, was born in 1862 in Thibodaux. He graduated from St. Louis University, and then Tulane University Medical School in 1899. He was president of Thibodaux Ice Works (Thibodaux Oyster Packing and Ice Company), director of the Bank of Lafourche, and served as medical examiner for several life insurance companies. Louis married Florestine Matharan of New Orleans and had two sons: Edward Louis (1890-1892) and Edwin Louis (1893-1949). Louis Joseph Meyer was born in France in 1824 and immigrated to the U.S. ca. 1830 with his father and siblings. He married Armantine Boudreaux of Terrebonne Parish in Belleville, Illinois on 5 May 1851. They later moved to Thibodaux and had two other children: Edward Louis (1858-1863) and Agnes (1865-1929).
