Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the professional papers of George Arceneaux, Jr. from his career as an attorney and a federal judge. This includes correspondence, reports, notes, blueprints, and other materials. The majority of the collection consists of Judge Arceneaux's criminal and civil court judicial work files, with other portions relating to his work as an attorney (including the Louisiana tidelands boundary dispute) and the construction of the federal court house in Houma, Louisiana.

Biographical Note

George Arceneaux, Jr. was born in New Orleans in 1928. He graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1949, and earned his law degree from the Washington College of Law at American University in 1957. He served as administrative assistant to U.S. Senator Allen J. Ellender of Louisiana from 1952 to 1960, and entered private practice in Houma, Louisiana, from 1960 to 1979. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter nominated Arceneaux to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. He served as a federal judge in this position from 1979 until his death in 1993.
