Biographical / Historical
The Canal toll ledger book was kept by Olezie Adams who lived and worked on Adams Island between Leeville and Grand Isle, Louisiana. The South Louisiana Canal and Navigation Company operated a toll canal in Leeville as a means of traveling from Bayou Terrebonne to Bayou Lafourche and then on to New Orleans. This particular canal was called the Gray Canal according to the blank undated receipt for passage distributed by Fisherman Canal Co. Inc. The Adams family moved to the island circa 1928 and lived there until circa 1937 when Adams became ill. The family then moved to Golden Meadow to be closer to medical care, however Adams died soon thereafter on June 6, 1938. The Adams home was the only home located on Adams island. The Adams children would light lanterns at the head of the canal in order to guide boaters. Mr. Olezie/Lezie Adams was married to Alice Guidry and they had ten children: Estella, Augusta, Olivia, Cherita, Bertha, Evada, Evida, Oliver, Ebdon and Theodore.
