Historical Note

Each state has established congressional districts based on population. Louisiana presently; has six congressional districts, each with one elected official to represent them in the House of Representatives. Congressional seats within a state; are determined by decennial census population counts. From 1973 until 1993, Louisiana had eight different districts. While in operation at Alexandria, the 8th district incorporated what is now District 5. Both the 7th and 8th districts are defunct. The 8th district was dissolved following the results of the 1990 census, and Louisiana's 7th district was dissolved in 2013.

In 1976, the 8th Congressional District of Louisiana's Democratic voters held an election to select no more than five candidates to represent Louisiana at the Democratic National Convention. The objective of the Democratic National Convention is to nominate a member of their party to run for president. The options for the democratic presidential nominees were George Corley Wallace Jr.,and Jimmy Carter, the then governor of Georgia. It would be Jimmy Carter who would win both the Democratic nominee and the Presidential election.
