Biographical / Historical

Keep Our Peaceful Environment, L.L.C. also know as KOPE was organized in 1999 by the residents of the Bayou Blue and Coteau communities in Southeastern Louisiana. The community organziation which is dedicated to preserving the lifestyle of Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes was formed to oppose the construction of a dirt car race track in Terrebonne parish. One of the main objectives of the organization was to give area residents more of an opportunity to learn about proposals for commercial development in their neighborhoods that could have an adverse affect on quality of life, property values, safety, wildlife, the environment, and other factors.

Although not opposed to commercial development, KOPE was opposed to any development which is contrary to the best interests of the community. Their belief is that any projects being considered should be judged not only on its impact to the community as a whole, but also on residents in the immediate area.

Marilyn Duet and John Rochelle served as co-chairs of the organization.
