Biographical Note

Constant Ignace Pitre was born 27 July 1886. His family moved from Grand Cheniere, La. to Cut Off, La. soon after the Hurricane of 1893, where he made a living as a fisherman, shrimper, and oyster farmer. In 1920, he opened a store in Cut Off that sold food commodities such as flour, rice, and canned goods, as well as hardware. One year after opening his store, he built a shipyard across from it on the bayou-side of Highway 1 where he repaired skiffs. His wife, Amy Lorraine, a native of Cote Blanche, ran the store with the help of three of their young children--Orleans, Alice, and Josephine. Amy also sold second-hand furniture and hats in a separate store. In 1948, Orleans and his nephew, Constant "Bill" Pitre bought the store from Constant Ignace and named it "P & P Grocery Store" which stood for "Pitre and Pitre." Upon Bill Pitre's return from the service in 1953, the store was closed and the building torn down. Constant Ignace died in 1952.
