Biographical / Historical

The Thibodaux Boiler Works was organized by Louis Braud, Joe Braud and J.A. Naquin in 1894. The firm at that time, and until the late 1920’s, was engaged in general sugar mill and boiler repair work. In 1928 management of the company was taken over by G.L. Braud and Henry P. Braud as president and secretary-treasurer respectively.

Because of the increase in oil activity in South Louisiana, the company expanded into the general oil-field repair business. To expedite handling of this work shops were established at Golden Meadow, Montegut, New Iberia and Darrow, in addition to the shop in Thibodaux.

During the year 1941, the shortage of material caused by the European War forced the curtailment of the activities of the several shops to such an extent that the management began to investigate the possibilities of other lines of work to utilize their organization of skilled machinists and mechanics.

Contracts with the Ordnance Department were signed in August, 1941, and purchase of machines and construction of the Ordnance Plant were begun later in the year. Pilot line production was begun in March, 1942, followed rapidly by full production of shell by the plant.

In 1943, the Thibodaux Boiler Works received the Army-Navy Award for Excellence in Production. It was the third such award to be made in the State of Louisiana.
