Historical Note
Terrebonne Parish was established in 1822 and is located on the Gulf coast of south Louisiana. The name derives from the French term for "good earth," and the area's cultural heritage was chiefly influenced by its French, Spanish, African, and Native American inhabitants. It is bordered by St. Mary Parish, Assumption Parish, Lafourche Parish, and the Gulf of Mexico, and its largest city is Houma. The major industries of the parish include sugar cultivation, the seafood industry, and oil.
