Scope and Contents
This collection consists of the records of the Lafourche Heritage Society. It includes a constitution, bylaws, correspondence, membership information, financial documents (bills, receipts, and bank statements), newsletters, legal documents, meeting minutes, notes, printed materials, publication manuscripts, surveys, interviews, essays, invitations, book jackets, scrapbooks, photographs, slides, cassette tapes, floppy disks, and ephemera. The materials concern the Society's activities relating to local history and culture, including preservation awards, historical markers, publications, and annual local history and genealogy seminars.

Historical Note
The Lafourche Heritage Society was formed in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana in the 1970s. Local activities associated with the celebration of the American Bicentennial inspired an interest among community members in the preservation of their history, traditions, and culture. The Society supports genealogical research, the documentation of local history, and historic preservation through annual seminars, preservation awards, historical markers, and publications relating to history and culture. Their publications include Surname Index (1981), Death Notices, 1859-1961 (1988), Historical Scenes of Thibodaux (1989), Stories My Grandparents Told Me (1993), and Lafourche Country, vol. I-III.
