Scope and Contents

This collection contains letters and correspondence from the time period of the American Revolution, legal contract, last will and testament, speeches by president of Louisiana State University, John Hunter, bond certificate, and program for Charles Elkins retirement from Nicholls State College (later known as Nicholls State University, Thibodaux, La.). Includes a State of Louisiana bond dated 1883 and Writ of Fieri Facias for a slave dated 1827.

Biographical / Historical

William R. Ziegler was born 15 January, 1898 in New Haven, Conn. to Adam and Louise Zeigler. He moved to New Orleans, La. in 1925 working for the Ford Motor Co. and Pan American Oil. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940, serving throughout World War II in the Corps of Engineers, and eventually achieved the rank of colonel. In 1949, he moved to Houma where he started his own business and became involved in numerous civic organizations. He helped organize the Houma chapter of the American Petroleum Institute and the Terrebonne Stamp and Coin Club. He also established a $1000 scholarship for ROTC students at Nicholls State University. Ziegler died 24 January 1975.
