Letter of recommendation for Mr. Hansen's use, concerning his "capability of conducting a sugar estate" in Louisiana. Contents endorsed by Evans Rogers of Philadelphia.

Letter, portion of a letter- pages 2 and 3, signed C.H. Sinclair, therefore, no indication to whom written. Gives an account of his visit to New York, makes personal observations about other people. On the back of this letter is a note, headed "Louisiana," then "Maggie", with the rest undecipherable, except for the following words at the end, written one beneath the other "Mag, Madge, Margaret, Mephistopheles"

Three pages of letter (beginning with page 2), no indication to whom written. Mentions friends in New Orleans who have died of yellow fever- the Irby family. Mentions other friends, etc. Advises letters to him should continue to be addresses at the Coast Survey Office in Washington.

Maggie Hanson, is probably who it was addressed to. Letter marked "confidential", and writer seems to be a suitor of Maggie.

Regrets he cannot repay his debt to Mr. Hanson at this time, because of his recent move from New Orleans and attendant heavy expenses (mentions he had to buy house servants), but hopes by winter he will be able to discharge his debt completely.

Scope and Contents This letter is in further reference to loan mentioned in item 5. Mr. Harrison states Mr. Purvis out of town, but it will be impossible for him to send any cash at present. He says "I have absent to the North Va. and Maryland & purchased a lot of slaves, which has consumed all my present means & we cannot collect any till our River rises and out clients ship cotton." Says Mr. Purvis' houses in New Orleans burned down recently and he will receive $3200 insurance, of which $2000 still...

Says he encloses sight draft on Messrs. B. & A. Soulie' of New Orleans for $700 and asks that the $1200 note be credited with this amount. He will pay the rest as soon as possible.

Says Mr. Purvis informed him that day that he would give a draft for the note Mr. Hanson holds against him. Requests Mr. Hanson return athe note immediately per "trip of the 'Twilight'"

He has written to a Mr. Morrison to make arrangements to pay off the note. He wants Mr. Harrison to send the note to Mr. Calderwood, and when received he (Purvis) will pay the amount due.

Acknowledges "your letter of complaint" re: note he endorsed for Mr. Purvis. Says Purvis is "like thousand of others just now. He has the will to pay but not the money." Expresses resentment at the tone of Mr. Hanson's letter.
