Biographical / Historical

The St. James Historical Society, based in Lutcher in St. James parish, Louisiana was formed in August of 1984. Its objectives were 1) to encourage the restoration, reconstruction and preservation of St. James Paish historical sites, 2) development of parks of historical significance, 3) locate, identify, preserve, and encourage preservation of all items of historical value, 4) establish historical museums and research centers of historical value, 5) encourage public awareness of historical and cultural heritage and 6) cooperate with other organizations having similar purposes and interests.

The organization published several books including "La Paroisse de St. Jacques" in 1988 and two volumes of the the "Levee Lagniappe" cookbook in 1986 and 1990 respectively. In 1990, the society opened a Cultural and Heritage Center in Lutcher with the restoration of the College Point Pharmacy building which had been moved to the site. The pharmacy served as the main museum and research center for the society. Over time, several other historic buildings were added to the site including the Paulina Post Office. Other structures were constructed on site for exhibit space and historic demonstrations including a blacksmith shop and Perique tobacco barn. Another major preservation and restoration project for the society was the restoration of a boat named the Olive Jeanette. The boat which was built in 1934 by the Lutcher and Moore Cypress Company and was initially used as a company boat and then later by fur trappers. The restoration of the boat was completed in 1989.

In 2014, the town of Lucher ended their lease with the St. James Historical Society for the museum property in order to build a fire station and thus forced the closure of the museum and site. The Society's research files, photographs, maps, ephemera and some artifacts were donated to the Nicholls State University Archives in 2014. Shortly thereafter in 2015, two historic buildings from the site (College Point Pharmacy and Paulina Post Office) were re-located to the St. James Welcome Center on Airline Highway for future museum space.
